Dear Parents and swimmers

The following is a list of things to remember and to note to ensure your son/daughter gets maximum benefit from the Landwork program offered through Breakers Swim Club.

BENEFITS OF LANDWORK
Support of the Breakers Swim Program is the prime goal of the Landwork sessions. It is a fantastic opportunity for swimmers to improve their strength and fitness as well as flexibility and co-ordination.

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN LANDWORK SESSIONS?

Testing is carried out by all classes:
✩ Sit-up test ✩ Push-up test ✩ Sit and Reach ✩ 6 minute skip

Juniors –
•	Introduction to exercises that can assist with increased core muscle strength and overall general fitness.

Intermediates –
•	Exercises to improve core muscle strength and strength throughout the body.
•	Improve flexibility and co-ordination.
•	Introduction to use of light hand weights. No exercises are allowed above the shoulder level.

Seniors -
•	Build on skills and strength gained at Intermediate Level.
•	A challenging class to supplement the Senior Swim program.
•	Transition to gym workout simulation.

SHOES – must be worn during all Landwork sessions.
Unfortunately, no shoes – no Landwork. This is an OHS issue as set by Craigie Leisure Centre.

PUNCTUALITY
Before swimming – please ensure that swimmers are ready to commence landwork at the set time. This means that they need to arrive 5-10 minutes before to get set up and organised.
After swimming – swimmers are NOT to go to change rooms. They are to go directly to Landwork room and get ready there.

MATS
It is ideal for each participant to have their own mat. These can be purchased for a reasonable price through sporting shops or Clark Rubber.

EFFORT
All swimmers are expected to put in at least 100% effort at all classes for maximum benefit. The classes are relatively short in duration so we need to make the most of it!

INJURY
If your son/daughter is carrying an injury or has some soreness, please let me know before the class so they can adjust to avoid any further injury or aggravation.

This information is also contained in the Landwork Rules and Regs document on the Squad Training page

IMPORTANT - SWA POLICY CHANGE RE. QUALIFYING TIMES

Dear Members,

Your Committee recently became aware that Swimming WA are about to bring in a change in policy that will seriously impact on our club swims and swimmers personally. Whilst SWA has not published or communicated these changes at this time my understanding is that:
•	Times obtained at Club Swims will not be able to be used at certain SWA events. At this stage this includes the States and SWA Long Distance Championships
•	If you have previously obtained a state qualifying time at a club swim or other sanctioned meet where electronic timing equipment was not in use you will not be able to use these as entry times to the states or SWA LD championships
•	ALL SWA events now require qualifying times unless specifically stated. This means that swimmers will need to obtain times at either club swims or specified sanctioned meets to be eligible to swim in SWA qualifying meets
•	Also please note that a large number of sanctioned meets also have events that require qualifying times (particularly the longer distance events)
•	Increase $ & time at Challenge Stadium to members

What does this all mean? Well, you will need to obtain times at club swims or sanctioned swim meets (which don’t have qualifying times) to be eligible to swim at most SWA Qualifying Meets however, you may not use any times from a club swim to qualify for the States, Nationals or at this stage, SWA Distance Championships.

These changes will significantly impact on our members as we will have to attend more SWA sanctioned meets in order to obtain times. This will cost us all dearly both financially and in time spent travelling to and attending larger meets. Your committee has lobbied both the Executive and Board of SWA however, they have refused to agree to our request for a phased in approach to electronic timing (as I believe they will be offering regional WA clubs).

I am still at this time unaware if our club does purchase electronic timing equipment whether we will be able to use it at club swims to obtain qualifying times. Once we are advised of such details our committee will look at the viability of purchasing the required equipment.

There are a large number of swim meets on the calendar therefore there should be sufficient opportunities for our members to obtain sprint times, longer distant events will be somewhat more difficult to obtain.

Whilst the long course calendar has been drawn up and target meets identified by your committee in consultation with our Head Coach I recommend that if you wish to qualify for a large number of events or long distance events that you request a meeting with your coach to ascertain the best meets for you individually to attend in order to obtain times for the specific events you compete in.

Please note that we will do whatever we can in order to assist our swimmers obtaining the required entry times - a reminder, if you require a time for a specific event please make application to our swim meet officer.

Again, these changes in policy are not documented on the SWA site and have not been communicated to your club. From enquires I have been informed that these changes will be outlined in the LC Almanac when published. I requested late last week that SWA broadcast these changes (and the Almanac) on line to the membership as soon as possible. I am also attending a Presidents forum with SWA later this week and will keep Breakers members updated.

Eric Smith
President
Breakers Swim Club

Further information & Background-

Our Swimmers, whom have already achieved State Qualifying Times at club swims, will not be able to use these times to enter the State Swimming Meet or other Qualifying Meets unless they were obtained at a meet that utilised electronic timing. This means times achieved at our club swims will not count. This of course is contrary to the SWA policy that was in force and operation at that time.

The new SWA Policy was apparently approved by the Board in June but has not been communicated to any club via any medium whatsoever.

The Swimming WA Board of Management Polices document as published on its website under the heading ‘Communication and Consultation’ states:

Principle: Members will be consulted on matters affecting them and will have an opportunity to have their views considered on changes that impact directly or indirectly on the membership of Swimming WA.

1.11 SWA is committed to communicating and consulting with members on matters that affect them in the swimming community. Consultation is more than simply informing members about what is happening.

1.12 The Board and Executive must ensure that members not only receive information on swimming issues but also have an opportunity to contribute and have their views considered before any proposal is finalised and the change is implemented.

Unfortunately, Swimming WA has neither consulted nor communicated these changes.
I am extremely disappointed with the decision of Swimming WA, however after discussions on the weekend with the Executive there appears little we can do as a club to have their decision reviewed or overturned. I will however be raising these concerns at the Presidents forum this week.
